“I run 600 Droughtmaster and Brahman cows, producing everything from weaners straight off the cows to feeder steers and the Jap Ox market.
The market was paying 20c/kg for black-coated cattle and this convinced me to use a black bull.
I saw the Webb Black bulls at the Charleville sale and went to the stud’s field day to look at the female herd.
I liked the structural soundness, weight for age and temperament of the Black Simmental cattle.
Their mobility is also important in our country.
I bought four bulls in November followed by a further two as there was no point in doing things by half.
One of my neighbours had used a Black Simmental bull with the first calves on the ground three months ago, and he is over the moon with them.
I have also noticed a lot of Simbrah calves in the markets with a really good finish.
I’m looking for that extra yield in the calves and will probably target the weaner market.
The Webb Black bulls have handled the conditions here really well, with two 12-month old bulls going straight to work in 70 females.’’
